Illicit Drugs Workgroup (IDWG)

The IDWG had its first clandestine laboratory investigation workshop in 2011 by an expert from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, USA. From 2012 to 2016, IDWG partnered the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs (SWGDRUG) to conduct a series of training during the annual meetings aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the regional drug testing labs on the minimum requirements on sampling, methods of analysis, quality assurance and measurement uncertainty. In 2017 again, IDWG will hold a clandestine laboratory investigation workshop with trainers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, USA.

In addition, to enhance the expertise and competency of drug analysis in specific areas, IDWG had also conducted three customised 4 to 5-day workshops on Cannabis Analysis (2015), Basic Drugs Course (2015) and Heroin Analysis (2017).

IDWG also actively utilises the secure online portal ForensicAlert to share drug newsletters from Drug Testing Labs and organisations from around the world with its members. Through these various platforms, IDWG aims to encourage knowledge sharing and information exchanges amongst its members on issues relating to illicit drugs analysis, especially on emergence and challenges of NPS in this region.
